A quilter’s bazaar will run throughout the duration of the final week, April 18-23, and will offer fabric along with books and tools at bargain prices, with all proceeds going to the Icehouse Gallery. This year’s raffle quilt, a wall hanging by Piecemakers Group member and well-known author of quilting reference books, Phyllis D. Miller of Murray, will be introduced at the show. Quilt raffle tickets will be available for each at the Icehouse or online by Pay Pal until December when the winning name will be drawn during the Impressions exhibition reception. Click below for details. These quilts all tell a story and some are displayed with placards describing their special characteristics. Roxanne Ferguson of Mayfield headed a project involving all of the group’s members. Called “whisper project,” an image is given to the first person on a team, and then the second person is showed the quilt based on the image, but not the original image. The second person creates a quilt based on the first, and then shows that to the third team member. The interest is seeing what the last person on the team creates compared to the first. It’s like the game where a word is whispered down a row of people and the word heard by the last person is compared to the original word to see how it has changed. Lou Ann Philpot from Murray is.
Have you ever seen a family gourd giraffes? How about a gourd Humpty Dumpty? Or a bejeweled gourd cat face? These are some of the highlights in this year's annual All About Gourds exhibition in Mayfield. On Sounds Good, Matt Markgraf speaks with Ric Watson, Executive Director of the Ice House Gallery about the exhibition and the activities at this weekend's Gourd Patch Arts Festival. Icehouse celebrates 25 years with some new signage outside of the gallery, a large blue sign directing people inside where they will find All About Gourds on exhibit through October 3. Some of the standouts are Diane Daubert's Giraffe Family, a Humpty Dumpty by Kenneth Tyler, a long-neck snake gourd eating a mouse, with a rattle at the end of its tail, a bejeweled cat face gourd and a decorated gourd from Tanzania. Gourds grow in the region and have a long tradition of being adapted into artwork. About 10 years ago, the Icehouse started the festival while the weather's nice in September. They attract works from artists all over the country. A group of artists exhibit every year. Festival this weekend features 30 arts and crafts vendors selling handmade items, children's activities from the derby car contest to laser tag, live music, food, a silent auction and more. Admission is free ( for the tag team game and climbing wall).
